NEW Development 10-2008

Thoughts, comments? Put them here.

Things I am working on immediately:

  • Little style-sheet tweaks. Things that are mostly theme
independent. Mostly done with the small tweaks. This
seems never ending, however. (Still working on this.)
  • See Change Log for more!
  • Why, hello~ there!

Important: If you get any kind of error, please copy and paste the first part (near the top) into the reply. It’ll help me track down the issue. .

Ack, what were the titles? And did you get any errors?

yeah! Congrats, LW, and Thank You for caring about us homewolfers (homewolves?)enough to explain everything in detail. :D

Sometimes, when I say “oh, I’m fine,” I want someone to look me in the eyes and say “Tell the truth.”

one was missing, i think, and the second was umbra deep. no errors, the both came up as posted, but don’t appear on the verses page or my profile.

Well, the good news is, they are saved. If you do a search for Umbra (user wildcards on each side of it) using the Search (in the menu) it is found. The bad news is, I’m not sure why new posts are not showing up. I can post and they show up just fine, so…yay for subtle bugs! I’ll get it fixed, though.

UPDATE: Rawr! Very subtle bug, but I think I have it fixed. Not sure why my posts worked, though. Basically, non-sticky posts were not being set to “non-sticky” correctly in new posts, and since I check for that field, it quietly ignored them. My posts are no different, yet, they showed up in my test. Straaaaaaange.

This place has footprints! I don’t like all the time stamps. Feels weird big brother is watching me …
Could we have a preview section of what our poem will look like before it is actually posted with a button that allows you to go back and edit before it’s made ‘hard copy’?
Will there no longer be a list of all that has been posted under the user names?

I am sure there is lots to do, just wondering.
Thanks!

But…other than the newer (Edited …) tags, there are really not any more dates that usual. They were all there on the old site, just ugly date stamps, instead of the (to me) sleek natural language posting times.

And yes, the user post listings will be coming.

A preview of a post is in the works too; I’m actually toying with a Javascript/AJAX idea version of this that I like, but it would require the user to have javascript turned on. (Most people do.) You could preview and not have to reload the page at all.

hmm. you are right, it is just the edited tags. I still don’t like the play by play of every move made on the site. The only time I like it is when I can see new replies to threads. In every other case it seems superfluous to me.
I have to say, I really like how clear the text boxes are, you can find things very quickly!

I liked the idea of getting a e-mail sent when you got a reply to a post, but would it be sent to your regular e-mail, or site e-mail?? I think regular hotmail type email would be cool for me I am sure some would agree and others disagree, I dunno… just curiosity i guess.

Coil your fingers in my shredded lungs, my love, so I may breathe more clearly.

Lord Wolf [AP]

It would go to the e-mail address you gave in your profile.

Zoey: I don’t think the site does a play-by-play at all, since I don’t track which pages/posts are visited or anything like that. Still, I could work up a way to have a personal preference to turn off the “edited on” time-stamps.

Quick edit: The ability to reply to news posts. I might change the [view] to [reply] however to make that more evident.

I think I’m already used to it. No worries LW, just me being ultra critical as usual.

Thanks for thinking on it though. I’m happy the transition was so smooth, nice work!

I think that eliminating the ‘time that has transpired’ part would be a good thing. I have always enjoyed looking at everything as new.

I do like ‘created on date’ part though. This gives you a sense of travel through one’s writings.

Thanks again for everything.

Lord Wolf [AP]

Hmm, you mean the natural language time? (The actual function in called “time_ago_in_words”.) I could make it an option for the user; personally, I like them. Date stamps are just too…plain to me, if that makes sense. My eyes tend to gloss over them, the brain not bothering to parse them. The natural language is easier for that, so I am not distracted from the posts themselves.

I’ll see about making them user options, though. Shouldn’t be too hard.

If you ever need help with CSS, I’m the CSS king :P [end total geekness]

Why write when someone will criticize? Why draw will people will critique? Because I write and draw to say I can, and I do it in my own way. Get over it.

:) Thanks, but I’ve been doing CSS since… Well, quite a long time now. >.> CSS is not my issue, my problem is being very picky about my graphics. (But I like what I have so far, just gotta finish ’em up.)

Okay, quick question. Is it just my computer, or are almost all the beginning letters missing from verse posts?

“She burned me down, down the the ground”

Lord Wolf [AP]

Um, yeah, the text parsing is being pissy. I’m looking into it as I get time. Fixed the bit with the missing letters, but other pages and various things in text will render wrong until I get the rest of it worked out.

UPDATE: I think this is now fixed. Damn broken code libraries. >.>

‘Course I don’t really notice this until now, but I am victim to the bug too. I don’t remember all of what I had up, but none of it shows up on my profile, and a username search doesn’t find em. A search on druid brings up two of my poems though. hrrm

Lord Wolf [AP]

Not a bug, but an incomplete feature…

…that is now complete. ;)

Clicking on a name will now have a historical post list. It’s ugly. I don’t like it. But it works.

Yay!! Thanks. :) You kick butt.

When clicking on the poems, I got two errors though. “For Transformation” and “An angel found”, it throws up “NoMethodError in Posts#show” (obviously with more detail, but you can get it by clicking on it, I didn’t want to post it all here and clog the thread). Thought ya’d like to know.

Lord Wolf [AP]

All fixed. Thanks! The problem was actually due from the transfer of users from the old DB to the new DB; signatures were not copied correctly resulting in “nil” values, thus breaking the code. Yay bug hunting.

…and you can now “delete” posts. It does not actually remove them, but flags them as deleted. I may make a more permanent option later, but for now, this soft-deletion will probably work out for the better. Also, if you have javascript on, it will prompt you to be sure you want to delete.
