So, I have reworked the Post Listings again. Do they work? Are they annoying? Do you like them? I’m looking for any feedback. :)
I should note, if you do not have Javascript enabled and using a modern enough browser, you won’t get the full effect, nor will you see who the last reply was by or when; I’m thinking about how to handle that, but overall, why would you not use Javascript? ^.^

I like the ‘thin’ layout when you look at it on the Index. You could even add a few more lines to each group. The old style (most recent) was pretty cool. I liked it because it incorporated last feedback/time.
I think the ‘thin’ way would be really cool if you could sort by last feedback time (like it did a while back). This would promote discussion on older works. I can not tell you how many times I am reading someone’s older work and it’ll stir up new thoughts.
Otherwise – everything is awesome. I love the java slides.
BTW – What did you think of Why’s book? Abby and I both loved it.
Actually, I have yet to read it. Everything I’ve done has been from pouring over the API’s directly. I just upgraded the site to use RoR 2.1.1, so in the process of moving some custom methods and helpers over to using named_scope’s instead, like instead of User.get_admins() I now have a named scope called User.admins(). Testing proved the named_scope version to be quite a bit faster. Same thing with Posts. Post.sticky_posts() instead of Post.find(:all, :conditions => {sticky = 1}). I’m right now working on a named_scope for post sorting, like you mention above: Post.sorted_posts(sort_field) but it’s only halfway done and not tested yet. I’m almost ready to take the site out of Dev mode and into Production mode, since all future functionality will be minor…I think. >.>
Maybe some day I’ll get around to reading it, but no time at the moment. ^.^

These are the times when I wish I was a little more computer savvy so I could say something really intelligent right here.:) Really, I think the site looks good. I, too, like how the poems slide down. It all looks modern and new and I think everyone’s doing a great job. I think I just need to get used to the posting being a separate thing, instead of sliding down with the poem. I know everythings still being worked on, though. So far, so good. :)
“Our God is a God who saves! The Sovereign LORD rescues us from death.”
Psalm 68:20
I’m not sure what you mean by being a separate thing: do you mean posting a reply or posting a new post in the first place?
I had thought about putting Replies on the slide-down, but on some posts, that got really long. Maybe, I’ll make it a toggle, so you click a Replies link, and the replies replaces the post? Hrmmm… [ponderates]
As for new posts, I’m toying with the idea that that too will slide in when you click on “Post New” at the top of the forum. The idea being, the less overall page loads, the better end-user experience.

I like the idea about the Post New sliding down. About the posting being a separate thing, or should I say link (which would make much more sense), I mean reading someone’s poem, then clicking on the separate link to post a comment on it. I’ll just have to get used to that. You are right, having the posts slide down with the poem might not be the greatest idea if someone does have a lot of posts. That would be interesting. Either way, I think the site looks good so far!

If you invest in one of the books. This one is my favorite:
Pragmatic Bookshelf Agile Web Development with Rails 2nd Edition
Awesome work! Abby and I started working on a cool skin a while back. Maybe we will pick it up soon.
I’m in agreement with laurel~brook about wishing I had something intelligent to say. I haven’t checked Homewolf in forever, actually, but whatever you’ve done now looks pretty good, LW. ;]

Please make it easy to see replies when you click on something. Honestly that’s all I care about.

Looks great. I do like it. I wish my dialup liked it better though. :( Seems to make things much slower.
Zoey: in the works, I promise. :)
Shadow: Huh, I’d think it would be faster due to it only doing partial page retrievals. :-/

I’d think so too, but for some reason it seems to be slower. It can take upwards of a full minute to drop down for me. I tend to just right click and open the link in a new tab because that seems to work better.
Edit: And then I go back, and they load in about 6-10 seconds. I guess it just depends. Don’t mind me and my crappy connection. ;)
Well, after working over how to get Replies to view in the slide down and every single one working and looking like crap. I’ve decided to revert to how the posts were displayed before, though I will try to keep the row elements as compact as possible, since the whole reason I started fussing with them was I thought they were too big. (I hate doing a lot of scrolling. >.>) When I can get this done, not sure, but hopefully before next weekend.

I like the new layout. It’s way cool.

Any way you could make it so we could only have to click once to see a post and it’s replies instead of preview?

Just thought I would clarify…my husband makes me use some crazy tv remote that also works as a mouse (kind of ) to click on websites. Our office computer died and now I have to use the tv computer to do everything….IT’s a pain in the ASS! The less clicks you give me ….the happier I am!!

okay ignore me…I think you already said you are going to change it. Sorry…..

Zoey, good idea. Yeah, I could make a user preference toggle, that will then determine if the view gets a “preview” link or a “go straight to the post, do not pass go, go not collect $200” link.
Hrm! [ponderous thoughts abound]

hehe zoey you crack me up..I’m still adjusting to this whole new homewolf! am I missing something here or is there no more “bumping”? I like the bump stuff hahahaa…I love the slide down effect, very cool..and that’s all I have to say..so glad zoey is embedded into homewolf now lol
Ahhh, yeah, currently, the posts do not do a secondary sort on last update. >.> I had intended to do that…not on the list, but I’ll add that. :)

Oh hey, just wondering.
What are the chances of a “Who’s online” feature being added?
:)
Zero to none. ;) I asked about this in the prior version of HomeWolf and got luke-warm to strong “no” answers. I might do a “who’s been on today” and just kinda randomize the order so it’s not indicative of who is on at this moment. I dunno; I like the feature, but others do not.
